Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a long-term disease that leads to inflammation of the joints and surrounding tissues. It can also affect other organs. The cause of RA is unknown. It is considered an autoimmune disease. The body's immune system normally fights off foreign substances, like viruses. But in an autoimmune disease, the immune system confuses healthy tissue for foreign substances. As a result, the body attacks itself. RA can occur at any age and women are affected more often than men.
RA usually affects joints on both sides of the body equally. Wrists, fingers, knees, feet, and ankles are the most commonly affected. The course and the severity of the illness can vary considerably. Infection, genes, and hormones may contribute to the disease.
QUEST currently has the following research studies open in the Detroit Area:
Rheumatoid Arthritis- Two Part Study
This study investigates a treatment for RA for people already using Methotrexate.
- The first part of this study compares an investigational treatment plus methotrexate to placebo plus methotrexate. This portion of the study requires 10 visits to QUEST over a 20 week period and qualifying patients would receive up to $500 compensation for their time and travel.
- The second part of this study is an open-label extension where patients have the option to receive the investigational drug for up to 48 weeks and receive up to $750 in additional compensation for time and travel.
